    NFC News Happy New Year!

It's time to say goodbye to 2008 and welcome 2009!

While an exciting year on many fronts, 2008 hasn't offered much in terms of Nirvana-related events or news. A couple of things worthy of mention include the new Charles R. Cross book, Cobain Unseen, the new book by Danny Goldberg, and the Kurt Cobain-inspired Converse line of shoes that was launched.

As always, thanks to all of you out there for still supporting Nirvana and this website.

NFC News Smashed guitar used by Cobain sells for $100,000
From the AP: A smashed guitar from the late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain has been sold to an unidentified private collector for $100,000.

Helen Hall, a broker in England, says it's the second-highest known price for an item of Cobain memorabilia. The seller was punk rocker Sluggo of The Grannies and Hullabaloo.

The sale was confirmed Tuesday by Jacob McMurray, senior curator at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, where the taped-up Fender Mustang guitar in sunburst finish was displayed for a time.

"It's a really cool-looking guitar because it's smashed and held together with duct tape and Kurt Cobain wrote on it," McMurray said.

Sluggo said he traded a working guitar for the smashed one during the first U.S. tour of Cobain's band, Nirvana. McMurray said Nirvana, living hand-to-mouth, was on a tour in New Jersey when Cobain smashed the guitar on stage and went looking for one to play at his next gig.

The swap was made while Cobain was staying at the apartment of Sluggo, who goes only by that name, and Sluggo's girlfriend, McMurray said. He said he hoped the buyer would allow the instrument to return to Seattle for a Cobain exhibit he is preparing for 2010.

"There's not a huge amount of broken Nirvana guitars out there," McMurray said, adding that most amount to "little slivers and fragments."

A news release from Hall said the highest price paid for a piece of Cobain memorabilia was $131,000 at a 2006 auction for his Mosrite Gospel Mark IV guitar.

NFC News New book: The Death Proclamation of Generation X
A new book came out earlier this year, exploring the attitude of Generation X, including a look at Kurt Cobain:

"Taking a hard, penetrating look at the despondent heart of darkness of the 1990s, The Death Proclamation of Generation X is a probing chronicle of America's thirteenth generation caught between the idealistic Baby Boomers and the well-financed Generation Y. Generation X was scapegoated and dismissed without the chance to prove themselves.

Blending tenets of psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology, author Maxim Furek offers a unique perspective to the post-modernist discourse by exploring the impact that personalities such as Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, River Phoenix, Marilyn Manson, and Anna Nicole Smith left on that generation. Evaluating the psychological and sociological variables of goth, grunge, and heroin, Furek weaves a dark tapestry of this unique demographic group born between 1965 and 1978.

The Death Proclamation of Generation X pieces together the complexities of Generation X to acknowledge their individuality, honor their existence, and to celebrate their future. They are a group with their own identity of music, attitude, and culture. The resilience of Generation X is but another example of the power of this special collection of people-a group of highly skilled and adaptive individuals."

NFC News Update on "The Nirvana Reader 1988-1992"
The NIRVANA Reader: 1988 – 1992 NOW AVAILABLE FOR CHRISTMAS DELIVERY

Compiled and Edited by John D. Luerssen, Book Celebrates Nirvana's (R)evolution

RockReaderBooks Premiere Title Hits Traditional Retailer Shelves January 2009

Few can argue that Nirvana defined rock as we now know it. From its infancy to its meteoric rise and ultimate legacy, The Nirvana Reader: 1988 – 1992 (Rock Reader Books ISBN: 978-0-557-02518-3) celebrates one of the most beloved and sadly missed bands ever in print form.

Collecting rare interviews and long out of print articles, this project was compiled and edited by award winning music journalist John D. Luerssen (Rivers' Edge: The Weezer Story) for his newly launched Rock Reader Books imprint.

Although the book won’t be available for purchase through traditional online sellers and brick and mortar stores until February 2009, fans who were hoping to have it under the tree this holiday season can order directly from the publisher here and have it in 5 to 8 days.

Upstart publisher Rock Reader Books presents fans with the opportunity to revisit the essential and in many cases rarely seen articles that accompanied Kurt Cobain, Chris Novoselic and Dave Grohl on their ascent from an underground trio to the self-professed 'Flower Sniffin’, Kitty Pettin’, Baby Kissin’ Corporate Rock Whores', and, ultimately, the icons that defined modern rock & roll.

'This is unlike any Nirvana book you’ve ever read,' says Luerssen. 'It's funny, it's fucked up, and it weaves the story of Nirvana together in their own words as they ascend from the outhouse to the penthouse.' Fanzines, radio interviews, defunct British mags and college papers all served as ideal sources of information and amusement in the collection of this material.

Adds Luerssen, 'If I have to cite my single favorite Kurt quote in the book it’s this one:

'If it was up to me, I'd get more oil tanker drivers drunk. I don’t value music much. I like the Beatles, but I hate Paul McCartney. I like Led Zeppelin, but I hate Robert Plant. I like the Who, but I hate Roger Daltrey.' "
