"In a recent installment of the music magazine 'Q' they reviewed the top 50 hardest rock albums (not in order) & Nirvana were mentioned in the list with the brillant 'hard rock' album 'In Utero' Also the cover of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' was voted the 3rd best album cover of all time (not by Q mag)." "In an english paper, the news of the world, in their magazine is a little article about famous people still earning money after their deaths, here is the bit about Kurt Cobain. 'Like Jimi Hendrix, he lived in Seattle, and like Hendrix, he died aged 27. But Kurt's death was intentional: Nirvana were the biggest grunge band ever, and Kurt couldn't handle fame so he comitted suicide. His wife, Courtney Love, has since used income from his estate to launch herself as a major player in Hollywood. A few days after this story was published in a New York newspaper, other media's started spreading it as well; "Rocker-actress Courtney Love suffered a miscarriage on the set of her new movie, the star's rep revealed Sunday. Love, who is in Vancouver, British Columbia, shooting the thriller 24 Hours, was 'very early in the pregnancy,' publicist Heidi Schaeffer tells the New York Daily News. 'She had been bleeding for several days. She'd been working very hard. Her director, Luis Mandoki, finally insisted on Tuesday that she go to the hospital. He put her in a car.' It's not clear who the father is, but the 36-year-old Hole diva was apparently visited by her ex-boyfriend, record exec Jim Barber, who flew up to be by her bedside. Barber and Love had been dating since 1999 but recently broke up, according to comments Barber made earlier this year." Another interesting story from the music world; "Following months of speculation, rumors and hearsay, ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell is again working with the remaining three members of Rage Against the Machine. Cornell's manager, Jim Guerinot, confirmed that the foursome are indeed working together as a band. "I was watching 'Music Express' earlier and they were interviewing Anthony Kiedis & Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And the interviewer asked; 'Kurt Cobain, what was he like? Was he a good person or what?' and Kiedis said 'He's my favorite musician of the past decade. It was always a pleasure playing shows with Nirvana. He meant alot to our a band. He was a very beautiful person.' And just last week on Music Express, they interviewed Beck, and Beck said 'Nobody would've cared about that song (Loser) if it wasn't for Nirvana or Kurt Cobain, because once the grunge thing took over, people all of a sudden got the song.' "In the June 7th issue of ROLLING STONE Magazine there is an article about Courtney Love's battle against her record label Geffen and Universal Music. She mentions some detail relating Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. 'I feel a spiritual commitment, due to the fact that I inherited a lot of Kurt [Cobain's] money,' she adds. 'My daughter has most of it, but I have some. There's some sort of deliverance in doing this. It would honor him. I own the Nirvana catalog, and I'm doing what I think is right by my husband. Part of it is closure on that, too.' Then, noting that Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst is a vice president at Interscope, she added with a laugh, 'I have the Nirvana catalog in my hands, so that makes me the president of Geffen-and artists are going to get fair contracts.'" "VH-1 compiled [a list of] 'The 100 most shocking events in Rock and Roll'. In the Top 5 were John Lennon's murder as #1, Michel Jackson being accused [for sexual relations with children] as #2 and Kurt Cobain's suicide was number four." Thanks to Marko for this one.

The latest NFC Poll; "What is your favorite B-side ?" ended after 4771 votes with this result; "Sappy" - 1256 votes (26%), "Marigold" - 370 votes (8%), "Moist Vagina" - 650 votes (14%), "Curmudgeon" - 211 votes (4%), "I Hate Myself and ..." - 966 votes (20%), "Here She Comes Now" - 213 votes (4%), "You've Got No Right" - 323 votes (7%), "Even in his Youth" - 782 votes (16%). As expected, the great song "Sappy" got the majority of the votes, with 26%. I must say this is also my personal favorite. The song was released officially on a compilation entitled "No Alternative". On a close 2nd place is "I Hate Myself and want to Die" - a song from the "Beavis and Butthead Experience" CD. A bit surprisingly is "Moist Vagina" as #4 with 14% of the votes. A new poll is up now; "Who should be in charge of the next Nirvana release?". Go vote on the main page !

NME put up an interesting article about Dave Grohl; "DAVE GROHL has spoken about the death of NIRVANA bandmate KURT COBAIN, saying that his immense popularity made it 'difficult for him to live his own life'. Grohl, now vocalist with the Foo Fighters, told UK magazine Kerrang! that the fact that teenagers could associate with the singer led to difficulties before he committed suicide in April 1994. Speaking about his time in Nirvana, Grohl said: 'It was the greatest job in the world. I was in this band that was selling millions of records, but I could go to a show and no-one would really recognise me. I never got hassled but I had all the perks of being in a huge band. It was unfortunate that Kurt had to go through the opposite of what I did. I think for someone like Kurt, whom millions of tortured kids related to, it was difficult for him to live his own life. And going through that whole experience, seeing what he was going through, and being entirely on the opposite end of that spectrum, living in complete anonymity, fortunately I got to stand back and spot the pitfalls ... I felt for him, and for anyone else in that situation.' He said that the Foo Fighters' success has been gradual, so he has been more able to deal with it. He said: 'It's almost ten years since Nevermind came out, so it's been ten years of playing shows and being on MTV, and making videos and being recognised. Today, the former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic turned 36.

"I was checking out an article on STP [Stone Temple Pilots] and their new album, 'Shangri-La Dee Da', due June 19. Scott [Weiland -- lead singer] gave a preview and commented on the tracks slated to be on the new album, one caught my eye in particularly. 'Too Cool Queenie': 'There was this boy/ He played in a rock 'n' roll band/ And he wasn't half bad/ Saving the world/ She said he could not do right/ So he took his life/ His story is true ... And now this girl/ She got real famous.' Weiland: 'I'm making no comments on that one.'" This could be a reference to Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love. Thanks to Steve and others for the story.

A few documents around the site were updated, most notably the NFC FAQ that now offers a couple of extra questions/answers. The new discussion board script has also been continuously updated over these past few days, fixing bugs and errors, and/or adding new functionality. The entire script now operates on a database, making it extremely fast to use. I believe it would take some effort to make it even faster than it is now. From the user's point of view, the board should have mostly the same features as the old UBB - along with a couple of extra details. In addition, I personally think it is easier to use than before, and looks a little better as well. Check out the board here.

We are still accepting contributions for the the 2nd volume of the NFC Compilation, featuring songs made by users of the board. So far, we have gotten almost 150 songs. Thanks to all the talented people out there who have submitted their work. We have received several great tunes, and picking out the ones who will end up on the final CD will not be an easy task. "Gary Busey and Sally Kirkland will star in the movie 'Thank You, Good Night' to be directed by Chuck Griffith. The movie is set in 1994 following the suicide of Kurt Cobain. The movie follows the story of a grunge rock band trying to gain notice in the club circuit. Production is underway in Los Angeles. Christian Campbell and Nicole Eggert will also star." Gary Busey, of course, is known for a host of movies, including "Chasers" and "Under Siege". I believe Christian Campbell was one of the stars in the short-lived show "Malibu Shores" (featuring Keri Russell) and Nicole Eggert was on "Baywatch" for a while. Should be an interesting movie. "In the latest issue of Spin magazine, an article talks about Napster having free, authorized downloads posted on their website. The most popular download, ever, was Nirvana's 'Verse Chorus Verse'. Just thought I'd tell you." The song in question is most likely "Sappy" and not VCV. Thanks to Chris for the news.

VH-1 recently compiled a "100 Greatest Videos" chart which featured Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as #1, Madonna's "Like a Prayer" as #2 and Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" on the #3 spot. Nirvana landed at #4 with (drum roll) "Smells Like Teen Spirit", closely followed by the brilliant Guns N' Roses piece "November Rain" at #5 and Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" as #6. Michael sent me an amusing picture of an action figure of Scott Evil from the first "Austin Powers" movie, featuring Mike Myers as Austin Powers and Seth Green as Scott Evil. In the movie, Seth can be spotted wearing a Nirvana shirt. As it turns out, on the plastic action figure of him, he is also wearing this shirt! The archive of posts made to the NFC Discussion Board has now been updated again. This time around, a lot of old threads from 1999 and 2000 were archived. Some of the more recent threads, made to the board before switching to the new script, were also added (but not all). The archive now offers more than 17.500 threads (or, in theory, discussions about 17.500 different topics!) that are all zipped up and indexed. As always, each thread is comprised of an arbitrary number of posts that can be anything from 1 to 200. So, if you ever get bored, there is almost one gigabyte of raw text available for reading. Courtney Love has now taken things one step further and is asking people to help her build an official Nirvana website at nirvana.com. So far, the details are brief, but basically they (Courtney and the webmaster of hole.com) are looking for people to do design and content for the forthcoming site. There is a thread about this project at the hole.com discussion board. If you have "web page making skills" and want to offer your services, go here.

Just a quick note to say that the book "Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects" by Kurt St. Thomas has not been released yet. At Barnes & Noble they have a February 2000 release date listed, but this is incorrect. Up until a few days ago you could also order the book from their site, and they listed it as being in stock, but this was equally incorrect; "Despite our efforts, we are unable to fulfill your order for the title(s) listed below because the title(s) has not yet been released. As additional information about the release date for this title(s) becomes available from the publisher, we will post the information on our site." (quote: Barnes & Noble customer service). Over at amazon.com, they argue that "This item will be published in January 2001. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives.", but this information is also incorrect, obviously. I don't know when the book will be published officially, but it is 272 pages and has the following ISBN: 0312206631.
