Back in May, Marek - an NFC visitor spent three weeks in the US, staying in the Seattle area during the last two days of his trip. He shot a bunch of photos from areas such as underneath the bridge, a couple of Kurt's former homes, and at Viretta Park. As mentioned previously in this news section - Krist Novoselic has written a book, Of Grunge & Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy!, which is set to be published on September 15 2004. The book spans 125 pages and is priced at a mere $9.95. "One part memoir, one part political platform, the bass player of Nirvana--the most heralded and influential rock band of the past twenty years--tells the story of his own musical and political coming-of-age. In the July 19 update I mentioned Seether covering Nirvana's You Know You're Right live in concert. It turns out they closed their performance at this year's Rock in Rio Lisboa festival with the same cover. I have put up a video of this which you can download here. Other bands performing at the festival included Metallica, Evanescence, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Peter Gabriel, Sepultura, Britney Spears, Sting, Alicia Keys and many others.

Not only in Aberdeen (Washington) are they working on a way to pay tribute to Kurt. Now his hometown of Hoquiam, WA also joins in: "[The] mayor recently signed a proclamation naming Kurt a native son of Hoquiam. This is because Hoquiam was Kurt's first hometown after he was born. I am making a public marker in honor of Kurt and it will be placed in what will be called 'Cobain Rock Garden'. It will feature the marker, a rubbing stone so people can take home a souvenir, a pebble pool so people can leave a small stone from their hometown, and a guitar shaped garden." Shane sent in this one: "I was at the Evanescence/Seether show last night in Toronto and at the end of Seether's performance they played Nirvana's You Know You're Right. And it was just amazing. They played everything perfectly, and Shaun Morgan [Seether frontman] had the voice down. After they played the song, Shaun destroyed the set (vintage Kurt!) and then walked off with the feedback cranked." After Seether's performance, Evanescence played and did a cover of Korn's briliant Thoughtless, joined by Korn's own guitar player. They also played the intro of Would? by Alice In Chains and Zero by the Smashing Pumpkins, which has been part of their set for a while. Sometimes they also cover Soundgarden's 4th of July. Seether's current single Broken actually includes a cover of Nirvana's Something In The Way performed live on 'X Session', 99x, Atlanta. Of course, the A-side Broken features the beautiful and talented Amy Lee of Evanescence - a great song that can also be found on the new edition of Seether's album, Disclaimer. It is also available on the soundtrack CD to the movie The Punisher. And, speaking of Evanescence, as mentioned here before - their single for Going Under includes a live acoustic cover of Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box. You can listen to it here.

Now that we're on the subject of popular bands covering Nirvana, I have previously mentioned Velvet Revolver's first single Slither including a cover of Nirvana's Negative Creep. You can now download that track here. The band has been finishing a number of their concerts with this very cover. For those who don't know, Velvet Revolver features former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and three former members of Guns N' Roses: Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan, as well as Dave Kushner of The Cult. Their first album, Contraband, came out last month.

"Has Dave Grohl become a Nine Inch Nail? Grohl has been logging some time behind the drum kit with Trent Reznor for the brooding rocker's first studio album since 1999's 'The Fragile'. Grohl's contributions are expected to appear on NIN's long-awaited new album, 'Bleed Through', due later this year. An unattributed message on Nine Inch Nails' official website says the band is 'in the midst of a very inspiring recording session that has everyone thrilled. Sorry for the lack of updates. Aside from Courtney's usual soap-opera lifestyle, there hasn't been much happening in the Nirvana world. Here's some interesting news though: "Kurt Cobain's guitar is going to be one of the main attractions of a new exhibition chronicling the long history of the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival. Featuring music, film, photographs and memorabilia from the musicians and fans, 'Music, Mud And Mayhem - 30 Years Of The Reading Festival' will take place at the Museum Of Reading between August 19 and November 28. Other artefacts sitting alongside Cobain's guitar from Nirvana's performance at the festival in 1992 include items from The Stranglers, Foo Fighters and Genesis. The festival arrived in Reading in 1971 following its move from Plumpton in Sussex. Matthew Williams, museum curator said: 'The festival has very much become part of life in Reading over the last 30 or so years. Almost everyone here is affected by it, either as fans or residents. It is a rite of passage that many young people go through and we are hoping to capture something of that sense of adventure in this exhibition." Story courtesy of ultimate-guitar.com.
