NFC News Percentage of Nirvana publishing rights sold
As reported here previously, Courtney Love has been trying to sell 25% of the publishing rights to the Nirvana catalogue. The sale has now been completed, apparently. According to Rolling Stone, the lucky buyer is Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music Publishing, former COO/GM of Virgin Records. He reportedly paid more than $50 million for the rights. At this point, there's no word on what this will mean for Nirvana's music in the future.

" 'I took on a strategic partner, Larry Mestel, to help me co-manage the estate because it was overwhelming,' Love explains. 'The affairs of Nirvana are so massive and so huge, and they've all fallen on my lap. I own almost all of [the publishing], . . . and it proved to be too much for me. I needed a partner to take Kurt Cobain's songs and bring them into the future and into the next generation. And this guy's the guy to do it.'

Mestel says his three-month-old company, Primary Wave, is thrilled to have bought into an American musical legacy. 'The appeal to me is that [Kurt was] one of the most important songwriters of his time,' Mestel says. 'Kurt was an incredible songwriter, and Courtney is an exceptionally talented person herself. So I felt the combination of Courtney's creativity and the things I can add can really help in creating more value for these copyrights.' "

NFC News Bono to buy stake in Nirvana publishing rights?
As reported earlier, Courtney Love is reportedly shopping around for a buyer to a 25% stake in the Nirvana catalogue. The Telegraph reports today that a likely buyer is a company that involves U2 frontman, Bono. "Elevation Partners, the private equity company whose partners include Bono, the U2 singer, is thought to be the front-runner in a multi-million pound deal to acquire a stake in the back catalogue of Nirvana. The deal would give any investor a cut of the royalties every time a Nirvana song is played.

The catalogue is reported to have a total value of up to $100m (£57m). Love has said that she wants a partner to co-manage the catalogue, which she finds a large responsibility.

Other groups thought to be in the frame are understood to be Sanctuary, the music group, and Chrysalis, the media group. Chorion, the intellectual property rights company, has also been mooted as a potential buyer although industry insiders have questioned the fit between its brands - which include Mr. Men and Enid Blyton - and Nirvana. A media executive said that Nirvana's songs would be a good asset. However he cautioned that a minority stake would make any acquirer a 'passenger on Love's bus'."
As of this moment, no official statement has been made concerning the sale. Read the complete story here.

NFC News Kurt Cobain's wild widow comes from a long line of misbehaving mamas!
Yesterday, Seattle Weekly published an article about Courtney Love and her family background, and the books the respective parties are putting out this year. "Courtney has mouthed off about her parents for decades. Having kept mum for years, Courtney's mom, Linda Carroll, an Oregon therapist, just published Her Mother's Daughter: A Memoir of the Mother I Never Knew and of My Daughter, Courtney Love (Doubleday, $24.95). In November, Courtney publishes Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love, the lead fall title for prestigious Farrar Straus Giroux's Faber imprint."

Courtney's own book, which is comprised partly of reproductions of her dairy pages (similar to the Kurt Cobain journals book), is bound to contain a number of stories about her relationship with Cobain.

Hank Harrison, Love's father, is also publishing a book this year: "Hank Harrison, Linda's estranged first husband and Courtney's estranged bio dad, plans to publish his retort, tentatively titled Love Kills: The Assassination of Kurt Cobain (Arkives Press), in Dirty Blonde's publicity slipstream. 'I will prevail in this debate,' Hank insists, promising to deliver his not widely shared views on Cobain's death, a counterbalance to Linda's 'maudlin diatribe,' the identity of Linda's actual father, plus 'dozens of pictures never before seen by anybody.' " All quotes and the picture is courtesy of the Seattle Weekly.

Read the complete article, which includes an interview with Courtney's mom, here.

NFC News Report: Courtney Love to sell 25% of the Nirvana catalogue
In today's edition of The Sunday Mirror, they are once again reporting that Courtney Love is prepared to sell her rights to the Nirvana back catalogue. This time, they have a quote from her to back it up: "It's not a fire sale or anything but I'm selling 25 per cent of the catalogue for quite a lot of money."

In December, The Sunday Mirror reported that she was selling the 25% to US lifestyle guru Martha Stewart. This has not been backed up officially, or by any other reliable source, however, and is mostly treated as tabloid fodder.

Apparently Courtney's remark comes from her recent visit to the UK: "Courtney has been in England to see friends including Sting's wife Trudie Styler and Hollywood actor Woody Harrelson. And she has lined-up a Channel 4 documentary to be shown this autumn about the making of her forthcoming solo album. She has also been talking with West End producers about a Shakespeare play." The rest of the article in today's paper gossips about her relationship with British comedian Steve Coogan. Read the full piece here.

Update: Apparently Courtney also spoke with NME about the sale. "I have decided that I need some co-management and a strategic partner [to help me] as it's such a huge responsibility," Love told NME.COM of her Nirvana plans. "This is the right thing to do for my family...whoever I do this deal with, I really have to like." Story courtesy of NME.
