NFC News New Kurt Cobain book to be published
Jeff Burlingame, Arts & Entertainment Editor of the Aberdeen Daily World - and co-founder of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee - recently finished a book on Kurt Cobain which will be published later this year. The project originally started when I was contacted in late 2004 by a publishing company looking to author a biography of Kurt Cobain for high school readers. Jeff saw my posting on this website from the publisher, concerning the book, and was ultimately chosen to write it. Jeff actually knew Kurt for a brief period of time and had been slowly working on a similar project for a few years.

"[The book] doesn't include any undocumented or speculative information. The sad thing to me is people read [undocumented or speculative information in other books about Cobain] and believe what they read.

I do have some original interviews and facts in my book and what isn't original is all documented with footnotes in the text and in the back. Indeed, I did get some information from the NFC and that is documented in there, as well. This site and others were a great help to me during my research. NFC's visitors were also a help and I'd like to thank them for that.

Overall, though, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well, Whatever, Nevermind isn't meant to break any new ground but rather to introduce younger readers to Kurt without all the sexed-up details and/or points created by using the writers' 'creative licenses'. When something is disputed, like his means of death, both sides are presented and sources are listed for readers to examine for further information on their own.

Although it's written for teens through adults, I honestly believe my book is the only 'just the facts' biography out there. The reasons for that are: 1. I'm a journalist not a fictionist; 2. My publisher wouldn't allow anything in the book that couldn't be verified; and 3. I know Kurt's family and friends and interact with them frequently. I couldn't live with myself knowing I'd created something just to try and sell a book or two.

I'm donating a portion of the proceeds to our Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee. I've already donated my own money to the Committee and countless hours of my own time. I met Kurt before anyone knew who he (or I, for that matter) was. I graduated high school with his sister. I was a Nirvana fan before I was a writer. I co-founded the Memorial Committee before the book was even a consideration. Now that I'm done with the book I'm still a Nirvana fan, actually even more so."

Thanks to Jeff for that info. The book is scheduled to be published in August, 2006.

NFC News Fans gather in Seattle to pay their respects
It has become a tradition that fans flock to Kurt Cobain's former residence, or the nearby Viretta Park, on April 5 and/or April 8 to pay their respects. This year was no different. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports from a April 5 vigil:

"Wednesday night, the presumed date that Cobain committed suicide, a small and steady stream of fans young and old, from as far as Switzerland and England, gathered outside the house at 171 E. Lake Washington Blvd. where Kurt's body was found three days after the fact on April 8, 1994. Ejae Dillury from Kent, England, planned a vacation to Seattle just to be there at the park bench where a half-dozen candles burned with incense amid bouquets of roses, tulips, guitar picks and other memorabilia. She had come out to the house a day before with her aunt, who now lives in Seattle.

Longtime Seattle pop-culture critic and photo-journalist Gillian Gaar wrote for the now-defunct alternative weekly The Rocket back in 1994, and had actually phoned Cobain's wife, Courtney Love, the night before his fateful suicide, but wasn't able to connect. Her next phone call related to Kurt was about news of his death. Gaar said she recently was called by a Dutch [sic] Web site wanting to know what Seattle was doing to remember Cobain this week. Gaar couldn't think of anything planned at all, and recalled the days after his death, when Seattle came together in mourning.

'You had a sense that you were part of a community. I just remember everyone feeling dazed a bit,' Gaar said. 'Now, you can see the legacy of the music and the legacy for Seattle, and in a way, the biggest legacy was beyond music, almost cultural.' "
Read the full story here. A couple of corrections: Gillian G. Gaar actually tried to call Courtney on April 5 and not April 4 (the news of his death, of course, didn't surface until April 8). The "Dutch" website mentioned was actually this one which is run by a Danish guy :)

NFC News Nirvana on TV
MTV in Germany will pay tribute to Kurt Cobain this April by showing the MTV Unplugged show on April 5 at 8.10 PM. "MTV Masters" about Nirvana will be broadcast at 9 PM. I believe you'll also hear some Nirvana in their "Rockzone" special at 11.10 PM the same day. The "MTV Masters" special is repeated on April 8 at 5 PM. As far as I can tell, MTV, MTV2 and VH-1 in the US and the UK won't be airing any Nirvana specials on April 5 or 8.

On April 5 it has been 12 years since Kurt Cobain died. You can light a virtual candle for him here, thanks to Nico and the German site, seattlesound.de.

NFC News DVD with previously unreleased material to be released
According to the online store play.com, a new unofficial Nirvana DVD is scheduled for a May 1, 2006 release. Where the footage used in the 2-disc "Collector's Box Set" stems from is rather unclear, but the description reads as follows: "The complete 2 DVD set documents the career and lives of Nirvana and the sorely missed Kurt Cobain; both films feature rare footage of Nirvana and Kurt filmed during their heyday during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The films include exclusive interviews with Kurt, Nirvana and relations, friends, colleagues and other associates; previously unseen photos, many from private collections, and covering the entire lives of all three members; location shoots across the two DVDs of pivotal Nirvana landmarks.

The Nirvana DVD Collector's Box is everything it promises to be. A double disc collection, made with fans in mind, and packaged for the collector. Features full colour outer slipcase, 2 inlays, colour picture discs - and all the other trimmings to provide an ideal package that will delight the band's ongoing fanbase the world over."
You can order it here. Thanks to Neil for the link. The same store also lists a DVD called "In Utero" to be released on June 26. No other info is available at this time. Finally, a CD+DVD package (also unofficial) called "The Document" was released last month in the UK on the Chrome Dreams label. The CD contains 75 minutes of interviews with the band. The documentary on the DVD is a 70-minute film that "contains rare footage of the band and exclusive interviews with close friends and colleagues. Also features unpublished photos, numerous location shots, news clips and a host of other features. 'Extras' include interactive discography and digital fan quiz." You can order it here. Also thanks to Neil for this one.
