NFC News NFC Compilation: Best Of |
The NFC Compilation: Best of album is now finally available. This thing has been more or less ready for a couple of years, but I haven't been able to finish it until now. Since 2001, three NFC Compilations have been released and this one collects the best songs from those three albums (which span six CDs). The NFC Compilation is basically a collection of songs made by people who post on the NFC Discussion Board - or their bands, of course. While many of the bands are no longer active, or no longer post on the board, the 'best of' contains a lot of really good music. You can find it here.

NFC News New Cobain documentary to open at Canadian film festival |
This year's Toronto International Film Festival (September 7 to 16) will feature the world premiere of AJ Schnack's Kurt Cobain documentary, "About a Son". From a news release by the festival: "Legendary musician and father of grunge Kurt Cobain himself provides the narration in AJ Schnack's KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON (USA, world premiere), which intimately traces the rock star's life from his hometown of Aberdeen to his famed days with Nirvana in Seattle. Drawing on over 25 hours of previously unreleased audio interviews, Schnack attempts to rediscover the man behind the myth." NFC News Nirvana cover on "Rock Star" | |
This season, the goal is to find a lead vocalist for Supernova - a band featuring Jason Newsted, Gilby Clarke and Tommy Lee. On the first elimination show, contender Dilana performed an explosive cover of Nirvana's Lithium. From a Houston Chronicle story published yesterday about the singer and her performance: "Of the 15 singers cast, Dilana has drawn some of the highest praise from the show's judges, first for a freaked-out version of Nirvana's Lithium, then for the haunting Middle Eastern vibe she gave Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. Last week she unleashed the Cranberries' dramatic Zombie, which judge Dave Navarro deemed a 'give-you-chills' performance." Full story here, courtesy of chron.com. NFC News New poll online |
After almost 15,000 votes and several weeks, I finally concluded the latest NFC poll. The poll revealed that a stunning 84% of the voters enjoyed the Fecal Matter track "Spank Thru" from last year's Sliver compilation. This indicates that there's still a big interest in the demo and that releasing a track from it has been warmly welcomed. A more controversial poll question is up now: Do you want Nirvana to re-unite with a new lead singer? It has long been the consensus that Nirvana ended with Kurt Cobain's death in 1994 and that a re-union of some sorts would never happen. The remaining members of the band have not expressed any interest in this either -- quite the contrary. However, I thought it would be interesting to get a fresh perspective from the fans on the issue. Especially in light of the fact that fellow Seattle grungers Alice in Chains recently re-united with a new lead singer (their original frontman Layne Staley died in 2002) and they are currently on a successful world tour. Click here for a story on MTV that brings you up to date with the other legendary bands from the "grunge" era. |

NFC News Grohl talks about his time in Nirvana |
During an acoustic Foo Fighters gig in California recently, Dave Grohl apparently talked about his time with Nirvana from stage: "During the encore, he indulged the fans with a nearly 10-minute narrative about his time with Nirvana, in which he revealed that he once shared an apartment with Kurt Cobain and a claustrophobic turtle. Grohl was not only willing to act out his role as a wandering rock-epic survivor; he also embraced his full-fledged arrival into middle age. He admitted that he now suffers from wine hangovers, not from the brain-numbing post-Jack traumas of the past." Read more. Former Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear joins the Foo Fighters on this tour of acoustic shows. |

NFC News Universal Music open the vaults |
BBC Worldwide has struck a deal with Universal Music to release over 3,000 rare download-only tracks from its archived vault, including music from Pulp, Nirvana and session tracks from John Peel's Radio 1 show. Universal Music said the deal would allow music fans to access rare TV and radio footage from the BBC's archives of Universal signed acts [such as Nirvana]. The record label intends to augment physical releases with additional downloadable BBC tracks over the coming weeks, including music from Pulp, Billy Fury, Marianne Faithful, Fairport Convention and Nirvana. Nirvana appeared on the John Peel show a number of times, so it's possible that tracks from these sessions will be released. Read the full story here. |

NFC News BBC documentary about Nirvana finishes shooting |
A British film crew is currently completing a documentary about Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. They recently finished shooting footage in Aberdeen, WA and Seattle, WA. The documentary will feature interviews with Jack Endino, original Nirvana drummer Chad Channing, photographer Charles Peterson and others. Check out an interesting story from the Aberdeen Daily Word about the film here. The producers of the documentary posted a message on the NFC Discussion Board a few weeks ago, looking for fans to participate.
