NFC News Book about In Utero to be published
Out next month is Gillian G. Gaar's book about Nirvana's In Utero album in the 33 1/3 series of books published by Continuum.

For the first time, the full story behind the legendary Nirvana album will be told - including many previously unpublished facts.

For example, it contains a chapter with information on the saga behind the track "Sappy", full details on the sessions leading up to the recording of In Utero (Music Source sessions in 1991 and Worth of Mouth sessions in 1992), Nirvana's stint in a BMG studio in Brazil in 1993, and of course the complete story on how In Utero came to be. The paperback spans 144 pages. You can find more info here.

Thanks to Gillian G. Gaar and Wendy Raffel. NFC will present a full review of the book soon.

Another book by the same author, Green Day: Rebels With A Cause, will soon be published in the UK by Omnibus Press. The book is "an in-depth account of Green Day's 20 year journey from their scrappy high school band days to international stardom."

Some more info from the press release:

"Green Day: Rebels With A Cause traces the band’s evolution through incisive interviews and first-hand accounts that expose as much about the music scene as the band members themselves. From their 1994 major label debut album Dookie to the award-winning American Idiot, Green Day have now successfully taken the spirit of punk into the world of stadium-rock. This intimate and perceptive band biography tells exactly how they did it and reveals what success has meant to these fêted Californian champions of alternative rock." Thanks to Sharon Kelly. NFC News New Nirvana book by Everett True
NIRVANA: The True Story by Everett True is a brand new book coming out in September 2006. It purports to be the "true story of Nirvana written by the only journalist allowed into Kurt Cobain's house immediately after his death." Here is the full press release:

"Everett True is responsible for bringing Nirvana, Hole, Pavement, Soundgarden and a host of other bands to public attention. He introduced Kurt to Courtney, performed on stage with Nirvana on numerous occasions, famously pushed Kurt onto the stage of the Reading festival in 1992 in a wheelchair and was the only journalist allowed into Kurt Cobain's house immediately after his death.

Nirvana: The True Story is an honest, moving, incisive, heartfelt re-evaluation of a band that have been misrepresented time and time again since their untimely demise in April 1994. As a personal friend of many of the stars of grunge Everett True is in a position to give far more of the detail behind the stories than ever before.

Everett True is the Editor-in-Chief of Plan B Magazine and a former Editor of Vox and Assistant Editor of Melody Maker. He has written books on The Ramones and The White Stripes, both published by Omnibus Press."

Thanks to Sharon Kelly and Music Sales. You can find an interesting interview with Everett True here (not recent). The book spans more than 500 pages and features a bunch of previously unpublished details on Nirvana, interview excerpts and much more.

NFC News Krist Novoselic involved with local Battle of the Bands contest

"I believe that our communities are stronger when people work together and the fair is an example of that- people coming together to celebrate what is local. The Battle of the Bands is such an important element this year as it encourages participation in music - which is such a positive activity- especially for young people living in rural areas where less opportunity exists," says Novoselic of his involvement in this year's Battle of the Bands.

Local talent will submit their three-song demos and entry forms by Friday, August 11th at Thiels Music locations, with the chance to perform for a panel of experts in the field including legendary producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Blue Cheer) and music journalist / author Gillian Gaar who, among writing for national publications such as Spin and Rolling Stone, also wrote the book She’s A Rebel- The History of Women in Rock n’ Roll. The judges will determine the finalists who will perform in the Battle of the Bands, as well as the ultimate winner.

The winning band will be presented with the opportunity to play a show at Seattle's premier all ages music venue, the Vera Project as well as an Epiphone guitar and bass provided by Gibson.

NFC News Frances wears Kurt's pyjama
From SFGate.com: Frances Bean Cobain stunned photographers on a new Elle magazine photo shoot when she turned up wearing her late father Kurt Cobain's old pajamas.

The shoot featured celebrity offspring wearing the clothes of their rock 'n' roll parents -- with Kimberly and Ruby Stewart sporting old lumberjack coats belonging to their dad Rod, and Midge Ure's daughter Molly Lorenne modeling the coat her father wore in the Ultravox video for "Vienna."

But 14-year-old Cobain's apparel, first worn by the tragic Nirvana frontman on his wedding day to Courtney Love, was a more bizarre choice.

She says, "He got married to my mom in them in Hawaii in 1992 so I thought it'd be cute if I wore them today."
