NFC News Nirvana on Cold Case |
As reported previously, this past Sunday's season premiere of CBS show Cold Case was centered around extensive use of Nirvana's music. Here's a brief summary of the episode Thrill Kill: "Recovered from the shooting, Lilly wants to convince her boss that she's ready to get back to work. The team re-opens the 1994 case of three 10-year-old kids who were beaten to death when Lilly suspects the teens convicted of the killings may have been wrongfully incarcerated." All the music played throughout the episode was by Nirvana. The following songs were used: While the episode mostly received positive comments from the fans, only 12.3 million viewers tuned in to Cold Case, airing at 9:00 p.m., down from the fourth-season premiere, which drew 17.6 million households. NFC News Dave Grohl: I'm as important to Nirvana as Kurt Cobain
Now frontman with Foo Fighters, Grohl insists that all of them had a big impact on how Nirvana sounded. 'I was actually Nirvana's fifth drummer and if you listen to the recordings with the previous guys you will notice it sounds different,' he told the Daily Mirror. 'Krist Novoselic and I have been called sidemen to Kurt for fucking years - that lawsuit is done with, y'know? 'We've been called hired guns and I just laugh. Anyone who has ever been in a band, hell... anyone who has ever even listened to a band, understands what happens when one of those elements is removed from the combination. It just falls apart.' However, Grohl insisted that despite the band being serious about their efforts, Cobain, Novoselic and himself never expected the impact the group caused. 'We were just three guys trying to make our way playing music. I think the effect the band had was more to do with everyone else than the band,' he suggested. 'When we went to rehearsals in Tacoma, Washington, to write music, there wasn't a whole lot of world domination in mind. We'd begin with an impromptu freeform noise jam and a lot of songs came out of that - from Smells Like Teen Spirit to Come As You Are. All those dynamic quiet/loud songs came out of those jams.'" NFC News Novoselic denies running for congress in new interview |
From The Olympian: "Critics of U.S. Rep. Brian Baird will have to look a little further if they think they can get someone like Krist Novoselic, former Nirvana bassist and active Democrat, to run for Congress in 2008. 'Let me put it this way: 'No way. Brian Baird has made good decisions for the 3rd district. I was proud of his vote against the war' in 2002, Novoselic said Tuesday in a telephone interview from his Grays River home in southwest Washington. " Read the full story here. |

NFC News Courtney Love settles money dispute with lawyers |
From the Seattle Weekly: " 'I did not fuck you,' was how Courtney Love responded when told by her Seattle attorneys that she owed them up to $341,000 plus interest. That was the balance due on legal fees attorney Katherine Hendricks and O. Yale Lewis say Love incurred in a 2002 lawsuit against former members of her late husband's band, Nirvana, from which she ultimately earned at least $9 million. But the troubled widow of Kurt Cobain has now agreed to settle the attorneys' tab for an undisclosed amount, according to King County Superior Court records. The settlement, effective Monday, Sept. 17, apparently ends a three-year claim by Hendricks and Lewis, who alleged Love breached their legal-services contract. Hendricks would not discuss details of the settlement or confirm whether Love had paid her debt on time, as she agreed to do in an Aug. 28 settlement report. A trial had been set to begin on Wednesday." Read the full story here. |

NFC News New book by author of "Stupid and Contagious"
As I reported back in May 2006, Crane's previous book got its title from a Nirvana lyric and included several Nirvana references. Even Courtney Love picked up a copy of it! The new book, while not Nirvana-related per se, is certainly a great read. As one reviewer from amazon.com wrote: "For everyone who has been eagerly awaiting the second novel by Caprice Crane following the fantastic STUPID AND CONTAGIOUS...clap your hands and say yeah. FORGET ABOUT IT is here and does not disappoint. Laugh out loud funny, FORGET ABOUT IT has a wonderful plot, fascinating characters (without giving anything away, I have to say that the lyric-spouting homeless lady is the best) and nuances that literally drop you into the heart of the book, from Long Island to Manhattan. This is pure, fun, enjoyable fiction at it's best...and not to be missed!" Check the author's official website for more information. Order the book online.

NFC News "About a Son" slated for February 2008 DVD release |
From Shout Factory: "A lot has been said about the late Nirvana singer in the 13 years since his death, but few words have actually been from Cobain himself. That will change with Kurt Cobain: About A Son, a new film coming to DVD from Shout! Factory in early 2008, which features Cobain's own voice, taken from monologues he taped as source material for Michael Azerrad's acclaimed book Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, over stunning images of the places-including Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle-that shaped his world. Look for the film showing theatrically leading up to the DVD release. It premieres next month in New York (Oct. 3 - IFC Center), Los Angeles (Oct. 5 - Nuart Theater), and Seattle (Oct. 12, Egyptian). The soundtrack, featuring original score by Steve Fisk and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and songs by David Bowie, REM, The Melvins, Iggy Pop, CCR, Mudhoney, and others is out now on Barsuk Records." Thanks to Keith for the tip. |
