NFC News "About a Son" coming to DVD on February 19, 2008
An Insightful and Gripping Meditation on the Late Musician and Artist, This Film Unveils the Never-Before-Heard Conversations Between Cobain and Journalist Michael Azerrad: Featuring the Music of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Queen and Score by Steve Fisk and Death Cab for Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard Available on DVD February 19, 2008 from Shout! Factory “The movie that’s moving audiences to tears.” – Rolling Stone “You'll feel like you’re literally seeing the world through [Cobain’s] eyes.” —Washington Post LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- Not since the late 1960s and early 1970s has there been a musical artist who so completely spoke for an entire generation. After the breakup of the Beatles and the tragic deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin, there were few music icons left of their magnitude – until the meteoric success of Nirvana and their breakthrough Nevermind. Following Kurt Cobain’s suicide three years later, Kurt became the icon for Generation X and remains so for today’s youth as well. Timed to coincide with Kurt Cobain’s 41st birth anniversary, KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is an intimate and moving portrait of the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain as told entirely in his own words. The film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006, was nominated for a 2007 Independent Spirit Award, was screened at numerous top international film festivals around the world, and will be released on DVD from Shout! Factory on February 19, 2008, the day before Cobain’s birthday. The DVD also contains a behind-the-scenes featurette and has a suggested retail price of $19.99. Directed by AJ Schnack, KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audio interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is a profound, almost dream-like account of Cobain's own successes and failures, thoughts and experiences, allowing the audience to gain unprecedented intimacy with this legendary figure. For this unique film, director AJ Schnack assembled selections from the Azerrad interviews and merged them with newly filmed, evocative imagery of the three cities in Washington state that played a major role in Cobain's life: Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle. These expressionistic images, combined with a haunting original score by Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, as well as the music of 20 artists who influenced or touched Cobain during his life - including Queen, the Melvins, David Bowie and Scratch Acid -- come together to create an extraordinary look at a man who went from impoverished indie rocker to world-famous tabloid figure in less than a year. In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life – from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame – and offers often piercing insights into his life, music, and times. The conversations featured in the film have never before been made public and reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but not particularly well understood. Sidetrack Films presents a Bonfire Films of America Productions. KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is directed and edited by AJ Schnack; producers, Shirley Moyers, Noah Khoshbin, Chris Green; co-producer, Michael Azerrad; executive producer, Ravi Anne; director of photography, Wyatt Troll; music supervisor, Linda Cohen; titles and animations, Tomorrow’s Brightest Minds. The film features the music of Bad Brains, Butthole Surfers, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Half Japanese, Iggy Pop, Leadbelly, Mark Lanegan, MDC, Melvins, Mudhoney, Queen, R.E.M, Scratch Acid, Vaselines and Young Marble Giants. NFC News Dave talks Nirvana
Do you ever listen to Nirvana albums? Dave: Not really. I hear the songs on the radio every now and then, but it's an effort to listen to them because I immediately remember what it was like the day we recorded - the food or the fucking snowstorm. It's like opening a box of old pictures, and I don't like to do that too often. Read the full interview here.

NFC News OTEP covers Nirvana |
The US metal band OTEP covered Nirvana's Breed for their latest album, The Ascension, which was released this past October. The video for the Nirvana cover can be found on YouTube: "For their new video, Otep created a spiritual, but nightmarish vision for their cover of Nirvana's "Breed" from their new album, The Ascension, which came out (Oct 30). The band shot the clip earlier this year with director Paul Brown, who helped Otep craft a surreal commentary about materialism, the media and perceptions of happiness." Thanks to Dimple for the tip. In related news, NFC'er Chris Hickman and a member of LiveNirvana also did a cover of Breed. You can check it out here where you'll also find a cover of Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam. |

NFC News Scarlett Johansson to play Courtney Love in new Cobain movie
So she's asked gorgeous Scarlett Johansson to portray her in the new £30million movie about life with tragic rocker husband Kurt Cobain. And Courtney, who is executive producer on the film, has been raving about Lost In Translation star Scarlett, who she knows from the LA party scene. The movie Heavier Than Heaven is based on a biography of Kurt written with Courtney's help. A close friend says: "Kirsten Dunst was rumoured to be in the frame, but Courtney really admires Scarlett and has already sent the contract out for her to sign. Courtney even copied Scarlett's sleek blonde movie look when she was in London for the Fashion Rocks party last year. "This is a labour of love for Courtney and she is putting her heart and soul into making it an accurate, credible glimpse of her life with Kurt." And Courtney has also lined up Oscar-nominated Ryan Gosling to play husband Kurt. Her friend adds: "She wants the best actors to portray them - she will be on set all the time giving Scarlett and Ryan advice on what it was like being one part of the most notorious couples since Sid and Nancy. It will be explosive." Story courtesy of The Daily Mirror.

NFC News New studio album by Flipper in the works |
From Billboard.com: "Fifteen years since its last studio album, influential punk outfit Flipper is up and running once more. 'I think that we're 99% there, if not done,' drummer Steve DePace tells Billboard.com of a new, as-yet-untitled Flipper album. 'We've got 10 songs, and we just did another round of mixing. The album sounds great -- I think it's some of our best work ever. That also is an indicator for more future songs to come. We know we can write songs with Krist now that sound just like Flipper.' The Krist that DePace mentions is none other than former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who has been a Flipper member since 2006 -- joining original members Bruce Loose (vocals), Ted Falconi (guitar), and DePace." The new album will feature Krist Novoselic on bass and is to be produced by Jack Endino. Read the full story here. Thanks to Greg Prato and Billboard. |
