NFC News Long-time Nirvana fan Stephanie Kuehnert to release her first rock 'n roll novel in July 2008!
Stephanie Kuehnert is an author and avid Nirvana fan. She's written essays about the band including one about her experiences in Seattle 10 years after Kurt's death, which appears on freshyarn.com. Her first novel I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE will be released by MTV Books on July 8, 2008. The official description of the book is:

A raw, edgy, emotional novel about growing up punk and living to tell.

The Clash. Social Distortion. Dead Kennedys. Patti Smith. The Ramones. Punk rock is in Emily Black's blood. Her mother, Louisa, hit the road to follow the incendiary music scene when Emily was four months old and never came back.

Now Emily's all grown up with a punk band of her own, determined to find the tune that will bring her mother home. Because if Louisa really is following the music, shouldn't it lead her right back to Emily?

One of the inspirations for I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE was Kurt Cobain's quote, "I like the comfort in knowing that women are the only future in rock 'n roll." And Nirvana fans will find Nirvana references and Nirvana inspired moments in the book. The characters attend Nirvana concerts, the last chapter of the book is set in Seattle, and like Nirvana, Emily's band is trying to break out of a small, rural town.

Nirvana biographer and author the New York Times bestselling author of Heavier Than Heaven, Charles R. Cross reviewed the book and says of it, "Kuehnert's love of music is apparent on every page in this powerful and moving story. Her fresh voice makes this novel stand out in the genre, and she writes as authentically about coming of age as she does punk rock. She's titled the book after a great song by Sleater-Kinney, and both that band, and the iconic Joey Ramone, would be proud of this effort."

I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE is available for pre-order on amazon.com and you can learn more about the book and author Stephanie Kuehnert on her website stephaniekuhnert.com.

NFC News Dave Grohl for President of the United States?
In an upcoming issue of Harp magazine, there is a cover story interview with former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

"Talking candidly with Harp Editor In Chief Scott Crawford, the Foo Fighters frontman holds forth on what prompted him to make a White House bid as an Independent candidate. Among his wit and wisdom:

On why he’s the right candidate for the job: 'There’s this redneck image of America that’s been cultivated over the last eight years by our redneck president. America has blue states, red states and all kinds of divisions, but we need someone to bring them all together—and that person is me. Every night when I’m on tour, I bring my message to thousands and thousands of people. There’s 10 thousand people that woke up this morning and felt like America is the right place to be because at our show last night they were spilling beer all over themselves and tongue kissing for two hours. What other candidate can do that?'

On George W. Bush’s 8-year reign: 'I can’t think of one president that’s been more detrimental to this country than George Bush. He’s not only set us back 50 years, I think he set us back 10,000 years. Morally this country has become prehistoric. I want us to be morally futuristic. I want to be so forward focused that we redefine American morals: family, music, barbecues.' "

This issue of Harp will hit newsstands the first week of March.

NFC News Animated documentary about Kurt Cobain in the works
Frosty @ collider.com did an interview with Brett Morgen who just finished a documentary about the Chicago Democratic convention of 1968. The interview reveals that Brett's next project is a "mixed media animated documentary" about Kurt Cobain which has been sanctioned by Courtney Love and will include previously unseen material. It is expected that the film will be ready in 3-4 years.

Some excerpts from the interview when asked more about Courtney providing permission to use Kurt Cobain and Nirvana material:

"It’s sort of like…yeah. It’s more than that.

It’s all of Kurt’s artifacts and archives and journals and yeah we’ll have the music of course but the…his home movies. He did stop action animation, which I don’t know if anyone’s ever seen but I saw it and it’s fucking great.

I mean it was crude and I’m gonna probably refine it, you know, in a way, I mean some of his stuff was out of focus or whatever—like unintentionally out of focus but we’re going to make a film as if Kurt Cobain was making his autobiography and so and one of the things about using animation in it is that at first I was like oh, man all the, you know, it was the worst time for archival films because from like ’83 to ’92 video sucked. [...]

The reason Kurt still resonates all over the world—you go anywhere all over this planet and you’ll find kids who are like have Kurt tattooed on their arms. It’s because he spoke—he was able to articulate his experiences as an alienated, disenfranchised kid and that’s why I think his music is still relevant today and resonates all over the world and I think we have to make the film that’s in every one of those kid’s heads that represents them.

And obviously it’s another heavily traveled subject—well mythologized and you’ve got to look at something like that and go, well if you’re gonna do something on that subject that a lot of people are familiar with you gotta do something different and new and add something to the cannon of work and so I think what this film will do is really get inside Kurt’s head and sort of see the world from the inside out. "

NFC News Flipper DVD release party - February 18
Former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic will be part of influential punk band FLIPPER's lineup during the group's appearance at the DVD-release party for "Flipper - Live Target Video 1980-81".

This all-ages event is free and will take place at Amoeba Music (1855 Haight St., San Francisco, CA 94117, 415.831.1200) on Monday, February 18 at 6:00 p.m.

FLIPPER will play a 15-to-20-minute set in celebration of the release. Those who attend will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the DVD at a special sale price one day before its official release. Attendees can also meet the band and get DVDs signed.

From the archives of San Francisco's famous Target Video comes this monster release from the classic original early '80s lineup of FLIPPER. Capturing extreme and scorching performances from 1980 and 1981, this DVD helps form a picture of the band that slowed down punk rock and made the kids suffer in the "louder-faster" days of hardcore. An intense blend of noise, punk and drone music coupled with an in-your-face attitude and performance style made FLIPPER one of most "out-there" bands of the early '80s scene. This DVD features stellar performances from Berkeley and the Kezar and is (mostly) unreleased and incredible snapshot into the other side of American hardcore.

Story courtesy of Blabbermouth.

More info about the release party available here.

Check out a clip from the DVD below:

There's more info about the DVD here. You can pre-order the DVD here.

Finally, don't forget to check out the official Flipper MySpace page. There will be a .com site soon ...
