NFC News Duff McKagan comments on alleged feud between Nirvana and Guns N' Roses
Over the years, much has been written in the press about the 'feud' between Nirvana and Guns N' Roses - particularly the clash between Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose. Now, on a fansite for Duff, he comments on the topic in a recent post:

"I actually never had a 'falling out' with any of those guys ... a lot was made out of some misinformation in the rock press. Yes, I AM friends with those guys and I actually just wrote the forward for a Metal Hammer Foo Fighters special edition magazine. Dave and Krist are excellent dudes."

NFC News Dave Grohl, not a big spender
Former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is featured in "The Discount Dozen" - a list of 12 celebrities who are well-known for their saving ways.

Grohl, who has been married to Jordyn Blum for five years and welcomed daughter Violet in 2006, lives the typical life of a suburban dad. In fact, the jeans-and-t-shirt-wearing 39-year-old says the millions he's acquired remain, for the most part, untouched.

"You can't take your lifestyle for granted," he said in a 2003 interview. "I've got tons of money, but I'm afraid to spend it. Knowing I don't even have a high school diploma to fall back on, I'm going to be really careful with what I've got."

NFC News Dale Crover, Weird Al Yankovic talk about covering Nirvana
In a recent interview, Melvins drummer Dale Crover talks about covering Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit with 70s singer Leif Garrett on the band's Crybaby album released in 2000.

I think maybe some of the Nirvana guys thought we were making fun of the song. If they thought that, they were right. If they take offense, they can go cash a check for it.

Read full interview here.

Famous for his silly but astute songs, comic musician Weird Al Yankovic also talked about his version of SLTS in a recent interview for the Calgary Herald.

When Nirvana's Kurt Cobain heard Weird Al Yankovic wanted to spoof the Seattle band's debut hit, Smells Like Teen Spirit, the grunge frontman immediately approved. Then he paused and had just one question for the parodist. "Um, it's not going to be about food, is it?"

"No," Yankovic replied, "it'll be about how no one can understand your lyrics."

NFC News Everett True reminisces about Nirvana, 20 years post Love Buzz
Veteran music journalist Everett True speaks out about inventing grunge, getting acquainted to Seattle Sub Pop bands, witnessing the rise and fall of Nirvana, and his special relation to the band.

If I'd had any idea of the furore that I would cause by stepping off a plane at the snow-covered Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in February 1989, maybe I would have chosen my words more carefully.

I was in the Pacific Northwest to write a two-part story on Seattle's nascent Sub Pop label for my London-based music paper Melody Maker.

The resulting articles were later credited with breaking both Sub Pop - and "grunge" music - to the world. Sub Pop was starting to make a name for itself with its laconic, long-haired rock bands - Soundgarden, Mudhoney, the behemoth-like Tad, Nirvana, Screaming Trees and many others.

I was enchanted. I'd never encountered big dumb rock before.

Unlike metal, which by the late-1980s had degenerated into a bad LA parody of itself, these rockers had an urgency. Already, the Northwest had a sound of its own - "Hard music played to a slow tempo" - as Kurt Cobain described it to me in 1989. A word was needed to describe what was happening: steeped in garage lore and disposable. You didn't need to look far to find something that matched the dirty, abrasive guitar sound of Mudhoney: grunge.

NFC News New interview with Spencer Elden (the 'Nevermind' baby)
New interview with Spencer Elden - the kid who was used on the iconic cover of Nirvana's Nevermind album some 17 years ago:

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," he says from his home in Los Angeles. "So that's kinda cool. I'm just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I'm here."

Elden's naked participation in this important moment in music history was rather accidental; Kirk Weddle, the photographer working on the cover, was simply a friend of Spencer's dad, Rick.

NFC News Frances Bean - intern at Rolling Stone!
Frances, the daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, is apparently doing an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine this summer: "The 15-year-old is the new summer aide at Rolling Stone. Insiders say 'she doesn't get coffee for anyone ... calls in sick all the time and wears funny outfits.'

A Rolling Stone rep denied the story, telling Page Six, 'She's a great girl, and we're thrilled to have her.' "
Story courtesy of the New York Post.

Meanwhile, Courtney Love who has attracted lots of controversy recently (doesn't she always?) writes on her blog yesterday that she's "so happy. I could just kiss the ocean, kiss the sky, and at the same time be morbidly depressed"! No word yet on how she has responded to the latest lawsuit by management firm London & Co. in relation to the Nirvana catalogue sale.

Love's attorney, Howard Weitzman, said of the allegations, "I'm aware there's an issue between London Co. and Courtney, but I have not seen the lawsuit."

As reported in a previous story, London is asking for $975,000 it claims it is owed as well as costs of the suit.

NFC News Courtney Love sued over Nirvana catalog sale
Various sources in the media dwell upon an Associated Press story announcing that a business management and accounting firm sued Courtney Love for nearly $1 million on Tuesday, July 22, claiming she failed to pay them a 5% share of profits from the $19.5 million sale of Nirvana's publishing catalog, in 2006. Love controls most of the rights to Cobain and Nirvana's work after his death in 1994. More here and here.

NFC News In Utero, the essential grunge album; Nirvana at Reading
An article about the Sub Pop 20th anniversary in The National lists Nirvana's In Utero as one of the five essential grunge albums. The paper also includes a story about Nirvana's 1991 Reading performance. "Although not an unknown quantity in the UK - the band's 1989 debut album Bleach attracted much critical praise - they carried none of the mystique and myth that history has subsequently ladled upon them. Yet over the following hour, a palpable wave of recognition swept the throng, as we bore witness to a frenzied statement of intent: howling three-minute barrages of punk-fueled rage tearing into the air, Marshall stacks creaking and roadies scurrying. Nirvana meant it." Read full article here.
